How to Find a Job...Without Using LinkedIn

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

LinkedIn seems to be the Holy Grail when it comes to job placement, recruiting, and job search. However, LinkedIn is simply the middleman between you and the job you are seeking. What you may not know is that companies pay LinkedIn a premium for every job they post. This automatically excludes the companies that do not have the budget to post every single available role. Additionally, you set yourself up as a small fish in a huge sea of candidates - even if you are fully qualified for the role. So how do we find these coveted roles and companies not found on LinkedIn?

Below I am going to give you a break down on how to do this using Google and some fun Boolean searches. Let's jump in!

Step 1 : Go to Google.com

Step 2: Instead of searching on LinkedIn we are going to be targeting the Recruiting SAAS companies via a Boolean search on Google. Here are 14 different examples:

  • Greenhouse - You should definitely include this one in all your searches. It is used by some of the top software companies such as Lyft, HelloFresh, Booking.com, etc.

  • Breezy HR

  • Bullhorn

  • Chameleon-i

  • Cloudrecruit

  • Graylink

  • Fishtank

  • JazzHR

  • Jobvite

  • Jobsoid

  • RecruitmentWorx

  • Dover

  • Ashbyhq

Example of a Boolean Search:

site:greenhouse.io | site:breezy.hr | site:bullhorn.com | site:chameleoni.com (engineer | developer) ("react" AND "JavaScript" AND "AWS" AND "Remote") (California OR CA) after:2022-07-01 (URL to Search)

This search produced about162 results. All without using LinkedIn!

Results of the Search:

These include all of the Recruiting SAAS companies that enable them to post the job publicly: (Please note, I am using the website domain name, not just the company name). site:greenhouse.io | site:breezy.hr | site:bullhorn.com | site:chameleoni.com

Types of positions for which we are looking: (engineer | developer)

Keywords we want to find in the job description: ("react" AND "JavaScript" AND "AWS" AND "Remote") - This is more or less a frontend developer position with a company that is using AWS for cloud services.

"Location, Location, Location": (California OR CA) - This does not make this position an on-site role. This is simply where the HQ or Satellite Office is physically located.

When was this job posted: after:2022-07-01 - Don't forget this part, you don't want to be applying to roles that were posted 5+ years ago!

I hope this post has taught you a new way to approach your job search! I do not think you should forego utilizing LinkedIn to it's full potential. With excellent networking exposure and a powerful search engine, it has many benefits to offer. However, if you feel stuck and need a new way of searching for a position, this is a great way to get around the big search giants (Monster, Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.) and speak directly with the companies in which you are interested. Best of luck on your job search!

Lastly, I enjoy receiving comments and would love to hear from you! Also, if this post has benefited you, feel free to share with others!
